"Campbell County High survivor story"

Campbell County school shooting survivor shares story:
One of the surviving victims of the Campbell County High School shooting, Assistant Principal Jim Pierce, decided to share his story with the local media. I’ll just quote the highlights…

“After a little discussion, bang, bang, bang,” Pierce describes what happened. “It was quick.”

Pierce, now recovering at home, says he tackled Bartley after a few shots had been fired.

The next thing he remembers is seeing Bartley tied up.

A teacher peeling Pierce off the floor told him to hang on and keep breathing.

“I know if someone didn’t do something, we were all doomed,” Pierce explained. “I just jumped to grab him, and I think that’s when he shot me.”

The bullet that grazed Pierce’s hand came close to killing him.

“It came through the back of my arm, through my side and it collapsed both my lungs,” he pointed to the scars. “I’ve never experienced that kind of pain before.”

This is the first time in 36 years of teaching Pierce has used his sick days for illness.

Pierce is left wondering why a student whose father was a boyhood friend would want to hurt him.

“We ran around together,” Pierce said of Kenneth, Sr. “I really hadn’t met Kenny Junior until he enrolled him at the high school. He introduced him because we were friends growing up.”

Other than that introduction, Pierce said the two had waved at each other in the hallway.

Both Pierce and Seale will carry bullets forever. Pierce isn’t sure how he feels about having it lodged behind his aorta.

He says he doesn’t have any hard feelings towards the alleged shooter but thinks he does need help.

Campbell County shooting victims called heroes

The three men who were shot at Campbell County High School Tuesday are being called heroes for getting the gun away from the suspect.

"The courageous efforts of Gary and Jim and Ken saved, probably saved many other lives and lives of our students," said Campbell County Superintendent Dr. Judy Blevins.

By all accounts, Principal Gary Seale and Assistant Principals Jim Pierce and Ken Bruce were dedicated to their students. Tuesday they showed just how much.

"I'm sure that when these men received their degrees and planned to enter into the field of education, they never dreamed they'd be put in a position of taking a bullet," said Blevins.

Now the boy who is accused may be tried as a man.

"We are asking he be tried as an adult and subject to adult penalties," said District Attorney General Paul Phillips.

Phillips says Bartley got the gun from home. And he did not have it at school long before others found out.

"The students did exactly what they should have done, they reported it to the appropriate officials," said Phillips.

Those officials called Bartley into the office. That is apparently when they got shot. But even after that, the students were first on their minds. They managed to get the gun away from Bartley and put the school into lockdown.

"The specific school officials that were present when this took place were heroic in the way they handled this situation," said Phillips.

Shooting victim remembered

A day after her husband was shot and killed at the school where he worked, Ken Bruce's wife, Jo, talked about the man she loved and how much his job meant to him.

Sitting in the garden of the church they attend, the Bruce family remembered the good times they had with Ken Bruce. "He was man who believed in three things, God, Family, and Country," says his wife, "and he lived by that."

Ken Bruce was one of three school administrators shot Tuesday afternoon at
Campbell County High School. A student, 15-year-old Kenny Bartley,is accused of shooting all three men.

Ken Bruce's wake will be Friday at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in LaFollette. From 5-8 with a prayer service at 8 p.m.

Funeral Mass is Saturday morning at
10 a.m.
Both are open to the community.
